Given the publicity leading up to Ogawa Coffee’s grand opening on Milk Street today, that hundreds of patrons lined up for a taste of the Japanese coffee shop’s offerings shouldn’t have been a surprise. The surprise, it turned out, was on the menu.
The shop has, as one might expect, coffee-based drinks that probably are the best you’ve ever had, especially the cappuccino. The “Signature” special will always be two drinks. For now, it’s a foamed espresso and a cappuccino for a combined $10. Prices are generally competitive with Starbucks.
But there’s also what Ogawa Coffee USA Executive Director Takako Oji called a typical Japanese breakfast — thick toast, a fried egg, salad, (excellent) bacon and black coffee smooth enough even for someone who usually prefers to add cream. The meal sells for $6.50.
